Na een periode van onduidelijkheid omtrent de Segway, is nu besloten dat een kenteken voor de tweewieler verplicht is. Daarmee wordt de Segway min of meer gelijkgesteld aan de snorfiets.
Vanaf 1 juli was het al toegestaan om de Segway te gebruiken, maar op dat moment was er nog geen duidelijkheid over de ‘status’ van het vervoermiddel. Nu is besloten dat minimaal een WA-verzekering verplicht is, de maximum snelheid 25 km/h bedraagt en dat over zowel fietspaden als rijbanen gereden mag worden. De minimum leeftijd bedraagt 16 jaar.

Om aan kenteken te kunnen bemachtigen moet de step eerst gekeurd worden door de RDW. Standaard zijn de wettelijk verplichte reflectoren en een bel of claxon bijvoorbeeld niet aanwezig. Is de Rijksdienst voor het Wegverkeer tevreden, dan wordt voor 68,50 euro een kenteken afgegeven.
